High temperature heat pump increased the capacity of district heating with geothermal energy

E-mail Print

Nafta-Geoterm, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in Maribor, Mining - Geological and Mechanical Engineering (both from Belgrade) and Klima from Smedereva in the context of the Eureka project HTH PUMP managed to develop a prototype high-temperature heat pump for the exploitation of low temperature geothermal resources and integrated it into the district heating system of Lendava.

After numerous problems and issues during development, the prototype eventually began its operation in the boiler room of Nafta Geoterm thanks to the valuable knowledge of the experts. Commissioning took place in October 2009 and by testing the operation it is continuously optimized.

The high temperature heat pump enables direct use of "waste" geothermal water, ensuring the necessary additional amount of heat for district heating. Namely, it operates with the temperature regime 40/60, which means that the spent heat water at 40 ° C, which is returned from the district heating system, is heated to 60 ° C, which allows us to re-heat buildings.

With the invested 60 MWh of electricity we will annually produce 360 MWh of heat with the heat pump so we will gain 300 MWh of heat from "waste" geothermal water. 360 MWh of heat would otherwise be produced by burning 40,000 Sm3 of natural gas, which now represents energy savings and reduces CO2 emissions by 124 tons / year. In this way we improve the efficiency of utilization of geothermal energy and contribute to environmental protection.

With the transfer of customers from the district heating system with natural gas and fuel oil in to a district heating system with geothermal energy, the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere also reduces. The construction of this system we are already heating about 60,000 m2.

With the completion of this project within the framework of Eureka, an article was published on the EUREKA website where the project is presented in detail.

The project HTH PUMP was partially co-financed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia - Slovenian partners and the Ministry of Science and Technological Development of Serbia - Serbian partners in the framework of the Eureka program.
